HAYWARD, Calif. -- To begin the conference season, the Cal State Monterey Bay Men's Soccer team traveled to Hayward to take on Bay Area foes in Cal State East Bay on Friday evening.
" Great way to open up CCAA play. What a battle," said head coach
Rob Cummings. "East Bay is good and we allowed them to get into a rhythm. We had two great goals by Garcia and Isrel Ayala. Nick Butler had a great dive to save a for sure goal off the line. Great team effort. We will enjoy this and get ready for Stanislaus on Sunday."
CSUMB got on the board first on
Alejandro Garcia's (Oxnard, Calif. / Hueneme High School) second goal of the season giving the Otters a 1–0 at intermission. The Pioneers got the goal back 12 minutes into the second half, knotting the game at one goal apiece.
In the 72nd minute,
Israel Ayala (Richmond, Calif. / Richmond High School) received a looping pass from
Adam Voloder (Sydney, Australia / Freeman Catholic College) and was able to chip in the winning goal passed the goalkeeper, sending the Otters off with a 2–1 victory.
Ayala was the seventh Otter to score this season with five Otters scoring once and two scoring twice, including the aforementioned Garcia.
The Otters improve to 4–1, 1–0 CCAA and will travel to Turlock, Calif. on Sunday to battle Stanislaus State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m
