SEASIDE, Calif. — Things got dicey early for the No. 5 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team, but the Otters made big plays when they needed them most to rally for a 4-3, 7-5 sweep of San Francisco State Friday afternoon at the SFSU Softball Field.
CSUMB improved to 34-9 overall and 19-7 in the CCAA with the wins. SFSU fell to 10-32 and 5-21.
Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) delivered a 2-out, 2-run double in the seventh inning of the opener to tie the game at 3-3.
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) followed with and RBI single up the middle to lift
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) to her 21st win of the season.
Reinhardt was rock solid in the opener, except for one third inning sequence in which she allowed consecutive doubles followed by a triple and a single that staked the Gators to a surprising 3-0 lead. SFSU starter Megan Clark was on top of her game, shutting out the Otters on two hits until
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) finally broke the ice with a 2-out solo shot in the top of the sixth.
A lead off bunt single in the seventh by
Courtney Varela (Hawthorne/Torrance HS), a pinch hit walk from
Jayme Stark (La Quinta HS) and a
Brittney Reed (Simi Valley/Moorpark College) sac bunt set the table for Greenhaw and Lopez complete the comeback.
The nightcap saw senior
Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) make her first start in the circle since a 2-1 win at SFSU on Apr. 12, 2013. Arterburn got the start due to an injury to
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) who did not make the trip.
Arterburn was nothing short of brilliant through five innings, shutting out the Gators on two hits as the Otter offense built a 6-0 lead. Greenhaw smacked her first home run of the season while
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) added two doubles and a pair of RBIs.
SFSU rallied to score four runs in the sixth inning, although three of them were unearned, to trim the Otter lead to 6-4. Consecutive 2-out singles from Noriega, Casto and pinch hitter
Jenae Coleman (Castaic/Hart HS) pulled one of those runs back before the Gators tacked on another unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final score.
Arterburn's line in her second career complete game included three strikeouts, two walks and just one earned run allowed. She improved to 2-1 and lowered her ERA to 2.50.
Greenhaw, Casto and Noriega each collected three hits on the day to lead the CSUMB offense.
CSUMB and SFSU will conclude their 4-game series Saturday with a noon doubleheader. The Otters return home to host Cal State Stanislaus in a 4-game set Apr. 17-18 at the Otter Sports Complex.
GO OTTERS!
