CHICO, Calif. — The No. 3 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team suffered through the bad end of a sweep for the first time since the 2013 season, dropping a doubleheader at Chico State 6-3 and 3-0 Friday afternoon in Chico.
The shutout in the nightcap marked the first time the Otters went scoreless since losing a 3-0 decision at Cal State Stanislaus on Mar. 14, 2014.
The one piece of good news for the Otters game off the bat of
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly), who went 3-for-7 on the day to raise her hitting streak to 14 games, the longest by an Otter this season. But she allowed a season-high six runs in the opener as her regular-season winning streak stopped at 17 games dating back to April of 2014.
The day for the Otters could be summed up in one play. Trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning of the nightcap, but with
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) up as the tying run and only one out, Noriega hit a popup to short. Wildcat shortstop Emily McEnaney botched the play, but the umpires adjudged that the ball wasn't hit high enough to invoke the infield fly rule.
That turned dropped popup into an easy double play, ending CSUMB's final threat of the game.
The Otters will look to bounce back into the win column when they conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
GO OTTERS!
