SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 3 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team improved to 9–0 against nonconference competition this season with an 11–0, 8–2 sweep of visiting Dominican University Tuesday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB improved to 18–3 overall while Dominican dipped to 4–15.
The Otters took the opener in five innings, their seventh victory via the run rule this season. By scoring 11 runs in that game, they reached double figures for the sixth time this season. The school record for run–rule wins is 11 games set in both 2010 and 2012. The school record for scoring double–digit runs is 10 games set in 2012.
The Otters still have at least 32 regular season games in which to reach both of those marks.
As for Tuesday's action, there were heroes aplenty for the Otters, starting with senior
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly), who ran her record to 11–0 with a 3–hit shutout in the opener. At the plate, she finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs and a pair of RBIs.
Sophomore first baseman
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) enjoyed a monster day of her own. Casto went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs—her third and fourth of the season—to go along with five runs and six RBIs.
The Otters gave Reinhardt all the support she would need in the first inning of the opener. A bases–loaded walk to Casto forced home the first run in front of
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS), who hit a base–clearing double to the wall in straight away center to stake the Otter to an early 4-0 lead.
Casto's 2-run homer made it 6-0 Otters in the third inning before they sealed the deal by scoring five runs with just one hit in the fourth. That rally included and RBI hit-by-pitch to
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) and a pair of bases-loaded walks.
The Otters also scored all the runs they would need in the nightcap by plating three in the first inning. Reinhardt's line drive single brought home the first run before Casto plated her with her second homer of the day.
A 5-run third that included RBI singles from
Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) and
Jenae Coleman (Castaic/Hart HS) put CSUMB in run rule territory again.
But Dominican sophomore second baseman Catlyn Cavender made the teams play on by hitting her sixth homer of the season with two outs in the fourth. The Penguins added a second run with two outs in the seventh, but that was all they would get off junior
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS), who scattered five hits to improve to 7–3.
CSUMB continues its 6-game homestand by welcoming Cal State Dominguez Hills to town for a four games this weekend. The series begins with a Friday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Maddy Casto scores after hitting her second homer in Tuesday's sweep of Dominican. GO OTTERS!
