SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 3 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team took sole possession of first place in the CCAA by sweeping red-hot Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-1 and 8-0 Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex
CSUMB (20-3, 11-3 CCAA) moved 1/2 game in front of Sonoma State, which split a doubleheader with Cal State East Bay Friday in Rohnert Park. CSUDH, which had won seven in a row entering the afternoon, dipped to 10-11 and 8-6.
Senior
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) led the way with her arm and her bat. In the circle, she scattered six hits in the opener to improve to a spotless 12-0. At the plate, she raised her batting average to .508 by going 5-for-6 with three doubles, five runs and a pair of RBIs.
At .508, she remains second on the team in batting after
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) lifted her average to .532 by going 4-for-6 with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs.
The Otters never trailed Friday, racing to leads of 2-0 and 5-1 in the opener. An RBI single from Reinhardt and a 2-run double by
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) staked the Otters to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the the nightcap.
For their part, the Toros left runners on base in each of the first three innings of the opener. But the only time they solved Reinhardt was when Stephanie Hua hit a 2-2 pitch out to deep left with two outs in the third.
Reinhardt made up for her mistake by leading off the Otter third with a double. Noriega brought her home with a single to start a 3-run rally that put the Otters comfortably in control.
Although the Otter offense pounded out 11 hits in just four innings in the nightcap, the game belonged to junior pitcher
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS), who fanned eight in completing her team-leading fourth shutout of the season.
Clarkson got some help from her defense as well, most specifically from Lopez. Her diving grab of Alexandra Mootry's liner to the gap in right center in the first inning saved two runs. In the third, Hua hit another gapper with a runner on that Lopez laid out for in right center, saving another run.
The Otters put the game away in their half of the third when Reinhardt, Noriega and
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) followed
Vanessa Avila's (Dana Point/Santiago Canyon CC) leadoff single with back-to-back-to-back doubles, sparking a 4-run outburst.
CSUMB's 5-inning win in Game 2 was its ninth run-rule win of the season. Their record for such victories is 11 set in 2010 and 2012.
CSUMB and CSUDH will conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
GO OTTERS!
