OTTERS vs. ARGONAUT HIGHLIGHTSSEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team will roll into this weekend's CCAA opener after another tour de force performance. Tuesday night in The Kelp Bed, the Otters posted the biggest blowout of an NCAA Division II opponent in school history with a 90–50 win over Pac West Conference foe Notre Dame de Namur.
It is the second game in a row the Otters could lay claim to that feat. Sunday night in their home opener, the Otters beat Simon Fraser University 93–67 to equal their biggest margin of victory over a Division II school to that point.
In case you're wondering, the record for the largest margin of victory ever came in a 104–52 win over Pacifica University in 2012. All of the aforementioned victories came in the
Rob Bishop era of Otter men's hoops.
The game was close for the first seven minutes, with NDNU taking its final lead at 14–13 on a pair of Brian Ying free throws. But a
Chris Porter (West Covina/Irvine Valley College) 3–pointer on the ensuing Otter possession not only returned the lead to CSUMB, it began a 22–2 run that ended all doubt as to the game's outcome.
The Otter lead was 47–23 by halftime and grew to as many as 43 points in the second half before settling in the 40–point final margin.
All 11 Otters in uniform played and scored Tuesday night, led by
Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga/Chaffey College), who scored 19 of his 20 points in the first half. He passed four of his career–high seven assists after intermission.
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) added 15 points and now needs exactly 100 to catch Brandon Ward for the Otter career scoring record. Porter had another solid game with 14 points and five rebounds while freshman
Julien Ducree (Rancho Cucamonga HS) became the first Otter rebounder to reach double figures this season with a game–high 10.
CSUMB hits the road to open CCAA play Friday at UC San Diego.
