Buzzer-Beater Buries Otters In Humboldt

Lumberjacks score with 0.5 remaining to win 75-74

Story Links

ARCATA, Calif. —A game of momentum swings saw the final swing take down the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team when Humboldt State guard Allan Guei knocked down a short, running jumper with five-tenths of a second remaining to sink the Otters, 75-74, Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.

Neither team led by more than seven points in a game featured 13 ties and 16 lead changes. The 15th lead change looked to be the key one for the Otters, who overcame a 7-point deficit with a 10-4 run to go up 72-67 with 2:12 remaining.

But after Humboldt cut the lead to 72-69 with 1:03 to play, the Otters turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, allowing the Lumberjacks to pull to within one. An Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) floater restored CSUMB's 3-point advantage with 19 seconds to play before a pair of Rakim Brown free throws made it 74-73 Otters with eight seconds left.

In a chilling redux of a heart-breaking loss in Humboldt two seasons back, the Otters had a chance to extend their lead to at least three points when Humboldt fouled Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS). But Zeller, an 81 percent free-throw shooter entering the night, missed the front end of a 1-and-1, setting up Guei's dash to victory.

CSUMB placed five scorers in double figures, led by Greg Anderson (Murieta/Palomar College), who posted his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Fertig and Zeller added 12 points apiece. Isaiah Smith (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) added 11 points, reaching double digits in consecutive games for the first time as an Otter.

The Otters return home to take on Cal State Stanislaus (Jan. 23) and Chico State (Jan. 24) in The Kelp Bed. Tipoff both nights will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcaps of men's/women's doubleheader action.
