SEASIDE, Calif. -- Junior Cori Reinhardt's (Riverside Poly) stellar pitching and timely hitting led the top-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay rallied at home to edge Western Oregon 3-1 in the NCAA Division II Softball West Regional Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB (46-9 overall) tied the school record for wins in a season with the victory. The Otters earned their first NCAA Tournament win since an 11-4 defeat of Montana State-Billings in 2012.
In its first NCAA Tournament game since 2008, eighth-seeded Western Oregon (33-22) jumped to a quick lead in when freshman Kelsie Gardner scored on a 2-out error with the bases loaded in the top of the first.
The Otters tied it in the fourth inning when Reinhardt opened the inning with a double and then scored when freshman
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) knocked a single up the middle.
Katie Denio (Tustin/Santiago Canyon CC) scored the go-ahead run one batter later on a sacrifice fly from
Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS).
CSUMB's defense provided the cover as it held the GNAC champion Wolves hitless in the last five innings. Western Oregon had its best chance to score again in the top of the sixth when freshman Destiny Kuehl drove a ball to deep left field, but it was safely collected by
Danica Arterburn (Spark, Nev./Spanish Springs HS).
Reinhardt got her 20th win of the season with three hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Western Oregon's Kelli Demianew held the Otters to four hits and struck out three.
The Otters face Cal Baptist in a winners bracket game Friday at 11 a.m. The Wolves will meet Sonoma State in an elimination game at 1:30 pm. Cal Baptist defeated Sonoma in the first game of the tournament, 10-4
