SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's basketball team took a page out of the Cal Poly Pomona playbook, throwing a suffocating 1–3–1 zone at Cal State Monterey Bay to flummox the Otters down the stretch in a 66–47 Gator win Saturday night in The Swamp.
Perhaps desperation was the mother of invention for SFSU (14–11, 12–10 CCAA), which needed Saturday's win to clinch the final berth in the CCAA Postseason Tournament. CSUMB finishes its best season since 2009 at 10–15 (8–14).
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) led the Otters with 12 points, including a pair of buckets in the final 20 seconds of the first half that sent CSUMB and SFSU to the lockkerrooms tied at 35–35. The game was still tied at 41–41 when the Gator zone took the wheels off the Otter wagon.
CSUMB went scoreless for five minutes but played good enough defense to stay within 49–43 by the second media timeout of the second half. But the Otters would score just four points over the final 9:23 of regulation as SFSU steadily pulled away.
No Otter other than Fertig scored more than six points Saturday night.
Jorey Scott (Reno, Nev./Miramar College) grabbed a team–high seven rebounds.
