SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team began its final weekend of the 2014 season in impressive fashion, rolling to a 25–21, 25–22, 25–17 sweep of NCAA Tournament contender Cal Poly Pomona Friday night in The Kelp Bed.
The Otters hit .254 while making just 10 errors. It was their lowest error total since making a school record low eight in a sweep of Cal State Stanislaus on Nov. 3, 2011, span of 89 matches.
With the Otter Blue Crue in full voice Friday night, junior
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) became a one–women wrecking crew, totalling 22 of CSUMB's 41 kills. She added 10 digs to complete her seventh double–double of the season.
Malcolm came up big in the first set, pounding out seven kills, including set point, to stake the Otters to an early lead. Cal Poly responded by grabbing a 13–7 lead midway through the second set. But the Otters fought back, using a pair of
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) kills to eventually turn a 19–17 deficit into a 21–19 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Broncos looked to turn things around in the third set, and appeared to be making a match of it until an Ashen kill broke an 11–11 tie and sent freshman
Ciara Reistad (La Quinta HS) back to the service line. Reistad proceeded to rip off nine consecutive points as the Otters took a commanding 21–11 lead.
In addition to Malcolm, junior libero
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) collected 14 digs, moving to within three of become the first Otter ever to crack the 1,400 mark for her career. She now has 445 digs for the season, passing Melissa Nickas for the No. 6 spot on the Otter single season list. With 19 digs in the season finale, she would pass Katie Bos for the fifth and claim three of the top five digs seasons in school history.
The Otters host UC San Diego Saturday to close out the 2014 schedule. CSUMB will bid farewell to Ashen and senior setter
Kelsey Johnston (Ripon HS), two of the top players in Otter history, in pregame ceremonies.
