RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The 2014–15 season couldn't have started much better for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team, which raced to leads of 10–0 and 19–2 while rolling to an 80–67 win over Holy Names University Friday night in the opening game of the CBU Lancer Classic.
Junior guard
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) led all scorers with 22 points for the Otters. Sophomore
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) just missed his career high, finishing with 18 points.
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar College) chipped in 14 points while sophomore
Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) reached double figures for the first time with 13 off the bench.
The Otters never trailed after
Jorey Scott (Reno, Nev./Miramar College) made a free throw on CSUMB's first possession. The Otters built a 10–0 lead before the game was five minutes old and HNU spent the rest of the evening chase a lead it would never catch.
CSUMB settled on an 11–point, 36–25 lead at intermission before building their second half advantage to as many as 19 points before a late Hawk run settled the final margin at 13.
"We're a work in progress, but we got production from the guys that we needed to produce," said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Bishop (@Coach_RBishop). "We battled and got the win. We will try and build on it tomorrow night."
CSUMB concludes tournament play Saturday against host and Pac West Conference contender Cal Baptist at 7 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
