SEASIDE, Calif. — What little luck the Cal State L.A. volleyball team had experienced in Seaside recently had been bad. But the Golden Eagles exorcised their Otter demons Saturday night with a 25–21, 20–25, 25–19, 25–22 win over the Otters in The Kelp Bed.
CSULA, hadn't won in The Kelp Bed since Oct. 19, 2009, but it stopped its own 4–match losing streak in Seaside while simultaneously snapping CSUMB's season–best 3–match win streak behind 23 kills from Iona Lofrano and 52 assists from Kelsey Molnar.
The Otters got 19 kills from
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) and five blocks apiece from
Amber Tygart (Yucaipa HS) and
Victoria Clardy (Westminster/Marina HS).
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) added an 11–kill, 10–dig double–double for the Otters, her sixth of the season.
After a sluggish start, the Otters roared back to hit .444 in Set 2 while leveling the match entering intermission. But the Golden Eagles came out of the lockerroom strong, siding out at 85 percent to pull away late in Set 3 for the win.
Set 4 proved to be an instant classic. The Otter held a slight advantage for much of the set as the teams played through 14 ties and two lead changes. With the match tied at 22–22, an untimely Otter attack error opened the door by just a sliver and a pair of Lofrano kills allowed the Golden Eagles to break through and secure the win.
Also of note for the Otters Saturday night were the 21 digs posted by junior libero
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS). Cookus now owns 1,340 career digs and needs just 38 more to break the school record of 1,377 set by Katie Bos from 2006–09.
CSUMB hits the road for its final trip of the 2014 season next weekend, heading to the other Bay area to take on San Francisco State Nov. 7 and Sonoma State Nov. 8. The Otters return home to close out the season Nov. 14–15 in The Kelp Bed.
GO OTTERS!
