Second Half Goals Lead To 1-1 Draw At CSUEB

Otters out-shot on offense, but defense and goaltending step up in tie game

HAYWARD, Calif. — After 110 minutes of play, the Cal State Monterey Bay soccer team found themselves locked in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon against Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Calif.

After a offensively stagnant first half by CSUMB in which they were out–shot by CSUEB (14-3) and trailed in shots on goal (0–3) the Otter defense was able to step up and keep the Pioneers out of the net leading to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minuts. However, 12 minutes after intermission, Cal State Monterey Bay would strike first.

On a cross from the left side, Duce Bell (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) was in the right place at the right time as he was able to slot a header into the back of the net to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.  The lead would be brief, however, as CSUEB's Duke Driggs was able to kick one in after the initial shot from Javier Martin rebounded off of Otter goaltender Evan Drake (Sacramento, Calif./El Camino HS), knotting the score at 1-1.

"Anytime you can get a point on the road in a conference game, it's a good day, " said head coach Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3), "we went 1-0-1 for the weekend. We'll take it and move on to another big weekend at (Cal State) LA and (Cal State) Dominguez Hills."

At the end of regulation, the score remained the same and the match would move into overtime. Despite leading the overtime periods in total shots, 6-1, the Pioneers were not able to net the winning goal, due to solid play in net by CSUMB's netminder, and the game would end in a 1-1 stalemate.

With the tie, the Otters move to a 2-4-3, 1-2-1 CCAA while the Pioneers sit at 3-4-3, 0-2-2 in conference play.

Cal State Monterey Bay will make the trip to Southern California to battle Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, October 10. Kick off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
