San Bernardino, Calif --- After two tough outings against UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona last weekend, the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Soccer team went on the road focused on controlling it's own playoff destiny, starting with Cal State San Bernardino which was ranked third in the first NCAA West Regional Rankings released earlier this week (Oct. 22). Things did not go CSUMB's way on Friday afternoon, as the CSUSB offense was too powerful for the Otter defense, surrendering four goals to the Coyotes en route to a 4-1 loss in San Bernardino at Premier Field.
The regionally ranked Coyotes got off to quick start, scoring their first goal after 13 minutes iof play off of a throw in that put the ball close enough for Paige Kang to fire one past CSUMB goalie
Sydney Roller (Gilbert HS) to go ahead on the Otters 1-0 early. Nine minutes later the Coyotes struck again, this time off the foot of Jasmine Williams for her fifth score of the season. A pass that was received just inside midfield forced Roller to charge Williams, however, Williams was given too much room and drilled it passed Roller into left net, stretching the hosts' lead to two.
In the 35th minute, the Murray sisters came together to put Cal State Monterey Bay on the board. A simple pass from
Juliet Murray (Newbury Park HS), twin sister
Jami Murray (Newbury Park HS) was able to corrale the pass and lace one from almost midfield, hitting the inside of the post and crossing the goal line for the Otters first score since October 12 vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills. It was the first assist for (Juliet) Murray and the first time she assisted her sister on a goal in her CSUMB career. The goal brought CSUMB to within one goal at a score of 2-1 going into halftime.
Cal State San Bernadino extended it's lead back to two goals in the 70th minute on a shot by Peyton Nocciolo that took two tries to convert. Nocciolo missed on the first try, but was able to gather the rebound, regroup and send it to the back of the net, giving the Coyotes a 3-1 lead. CSUSB would not stop there, adding it's fourth goal of the match in the 81st minute, putting the game out of reach for the Otters as they would go on to suffer the 4-1 loss.
"We battle well but need to make better decisions all over the field and need to shoot more if we want to win games," explained Head Coach
Erin Reinke.
The Otters fall to 6-8, 3-6 CCAA and currently sit eighth in the CCAA standings. CSUMB will need to win their last two games and receive help from the teams above them in the standings in order to be one of the top six teams and receive a conference tournament birth. The Coyotes improve to 13-3, 6-3 CCAA and move into a tie for second place in the CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay will head to Chico State on Sunday, October 26 to face the Wildcats in an attempt to move closer to the elusive CCAA Tournament. Kick off is set for 11:30 a.m.
GO OTTERS!
