Otters Postseason Hopes Spoiled By Penalty Kick

Penalty kick in 72' gives Otters 0-1 loss after pesky defense held a 0-0 tie

CHICO, Calif --- Needing to win both of it's final two games to have a shot at a CCAA Tournament bid the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Soccer team matched up against the second place team in the CCAA in Chico State, which was also ranked seventh–ranked team in the first official DII NCAA West Regional rankings. CSUMB took a scoreless game into the 71st minute, but a foul in the box gave Chico State a chance with a penalty kick, turning into a 1–0 lead, handing the Otters the eventual loss by the same score at University Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Otters and Wildcats played a scoreless first half, much in part to pesky Junior goalkeeper Sydney Roller (Gilbert HS), who recorded five saves in the first half and eight total in the match.

The defensive stand continued into the second half, until a foul was called on Roller in the box after she was beat by a forward, leading to the third penalty kick surrendered by the Otters this season. Chico State proceeded to convert the PK, taking a 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute. Despite attempts to get on the board in the final 18 minutes, the Otters were not able to find the back of the net, faced with the 1-0 loss.

Jami Murray (Newbury Park HS) led the Otters with three shots, two of which were on target, moving her season total to 25.

CSUMB drops to 6–9–0, 3–7–0 CCAA and falls out of contention for the CCAA Tournament, while Chico moves to 10–4–2, 7–2–1 CCAA and remain in second place in the conference standings. Cal State Monterey Bay will return to the Otter Sports Complex on Thursday, Oct. 30, to play the final game of the 2014 season and celebrate Senior Day. A pregame ceremony will take place to recognize the eight seniors playing their final collegiate soccer match.  Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
