Otters Miss Chance To Improve Playoff Hopes

Otters face set back in 2-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona

SEASIDE, Calif. — On Sunday afternoon, the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Soccer team came out looking to avenge Friday's loss and take a weekend split into the last road trip of the season. However, Cal Poly Pomona had other ideas, netting a goal in each half to hand CSUMB it's second loss in as many games by a score of 2–0 at home in the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters fall to 6-7-0, 3-5-0 CCAA, but still hold hopes of making a playoff run.  The Broncos improve to 10-4-0, 5-3-0 in conference play.

The Otters didn't look themselves in the first half, providing one shot in the opening 45 minutes.  While the Broncos had a three shot advantage, it was Stacey Atwater (2) who was able to flick one over the head of Otter goalie Lily Garza (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside HS) on a one–vs–one opportunity into the back of the net to give Pomona a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Cal Poly Pomona didn't stop there, out–shooting Cal State Monterey Bay 11–3 in the second half they were able to find the paydirt once again at the end of the 59th minute.  Ariana Fleischman made a pass to Melissa Martinez (4) who was again able to chip the ball over the charging Garza, and watched the ball bounce into the goal, putting the Otters in a 0–2 hole that they would not dig out of.

Overall, Michelle Garrone (Petaluma, Calif./Petaluma HS) contributed two shots to her teams total of four; both were on target.  Garza saw a flurry of action against the Broncos, finishing with nine saves.

Cal State Monterey Bay will hit the road for the final time this season beginning in San Bernardino were they will take on another playoff contender in Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, October 24. CSUMB will finish the road trip against Chico State, who is also in the playoff hunt, on Sunday, October 26.  Kickoff for is set for 12:30 p.m and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
