Penalty Kick Hurts Otters In Loss To Tritons At Home

A Triton penalty kick in 85th minute hands CSUMB a loss at home.

SEASIDE, Calif. — With the CCAA postseason looming, the Cal State Women's Soccer team faced off against UC San Diego Friday afternoon in a must-win match for both teams. It took 84 minutes to decide a winner as both teams fought hard, but a foul in the box doomed CSUMB, as UCSD took advantage of the penalty kick, handing the Otters a 0–1 loss inside the Otter Sports Complex.

The first half saw even play from both teams as the bulk of the action took place in the middle of the field. After the first 45 minutes, five total shots had been taken, giving the Tritons the slight 3–2 edge heading into halftime.

The Otter attack picked up in the second half, more than doubling their first half production, leading the second half in shots, 8–3.  However, in the 84th minute, a penalty in the box called on the Otters gave the Tritons their opportunity.  UCSD's Cassie Callahan was called upon to try the PK, and was able to convert, giving UC San Diego a 1-0 lead late in the match. While CSUMB kept their heads up and attempted to find the equalizer, nothing could find the back of the net as the Otters took the rough 0-1 loss.

Of the Otters 10 total shots, Senior Hannah Cobb (Norco, Calif./Norco HS) fired  three of them, two of which were on target; Cobb led the team in both categories.

With the loss CSUMB falls to and even .500 at 6-6-, 3-4 CCAA, while UCSD moves to 6-5-2, 3-3-1 in conference play.  Cal State Monterey Bay will return to the Otter Sports Complex on Sunday to take on Cal Poly Pomona.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
