SEASIDE, Calif. — On a rare Wednesday night game in the Kelp Bed, the Cal State Monterey Bay came out victorious over the Cal State East Bay in three straight sets, 25–14, 25–19, 25–16. The Otters earned their second straight sweep for the first time since 2012, a span of 56 matches.
It was a back–and–forth first set, but with the teams tied at four, a ball handing error by the CSUEB setter gave the Otters momentum to go on a 8–2 run, giving them a 12–6 lead. CSUMB never looked back as they were able to convert on 11–of–14 sideout attempts (78%) leading to a 25–14 win in the first set, the teams largest margin of victory of the season.
The second set was much closer throughout with six ties and three lead changes. However, the pesky Otter defense was able to hold their opponent to under 20 points and move the match to 2–0 with a 25–19 win going into the break. The Otters had their eye on the prize in the third set, getting off to a 4–1 lead and at one point led by at many as 11 points en route to a 25–16 win.
Junior outside hitter Jessica Malcolm (Lodi, Calif./Lodi HS) led the Otter with 12 kills, while Amber Hall had a team high 12 kills for the Pioneers. Monterey Bay setter Leana Moleta (Palmdale, Calif./Paraclete HS) handed out 33 assists in the match.
The Otters improve their record to 3–8, 3–4 CCAA. Cal State East Bay falls to 5–7, 2–5 CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay will be back in action on Friday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m when it takes on Sonoma State.
GO OTTERS!
