SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second consecutive day, an excruciating opening–game loss led to a long day for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team Saturday. This time, This three unearned runs in the 11th inning spoiled a wonderful pitcher's duel to hand Cal State Dominguez Hills a 4–1 win in Game 1 before the Toros completed the sweep with a 6–4 win in the nightcap at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUDH senior Stephanie Jimenez fanned 11 in the opener and was in line to win when Adriana Sanchez drove home the first run of the game with a 2–out single in the fifth. But Otter sophomore Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) made up for her one mistake in the circle by beating out a 2–out infield single in the sixth to plate Skyler Valdivia (Beaumont HS) with the tying run.

Both pitchers settled in from that point, allowing just one hit each until the 11th. That's when Toro left fielder Catherine Brown reached on a leadoff error then came around to score three batters later on a Daisy Vazquez single. Two more singles and a second error led to two more runs and the CSUDH win.

Pitching dominated Game 2 as well. Otter starter Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) made just two mistakes early: walking No. 9 hitter Daisy Beltran in the third inning then leaving a pitch up that Sanchez sent out to left center for her 16th home run of the season. A pair of CSUMB errors exacerbated the situation and Clarkson was forced from the game in the fourth.

Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Shingle Springs HS) came on to work out of the fourth–inning jam and tossed four innings of shutout relief to give the Otters time to come back.

CSUMB broke through in its half of the fourth when Bianca Noriega's (Ventura/Camarillo HS) RBI single make it 6–1 and chased Toro starter Lauren Harper. Jimenez came squelch that Otter rally, but it wouldn't be the last one.

A Vanessa Avila (Dana Point/Santiago Canyon College) single and an Orozco walk got things started in the Otter fifth. After an error loaded the bases with two outs, Lauren Ermitano (Oakland/Ohlone College) drove a bases–clearing double off the wall in right center. That would prove to be CSUMB's last hurrah, however, as Jimenez set down the final seven Otters in order to close the win.

Reinhardt led the Otter offense with four hits, including her second consecutive 3–hit game in the opener. Valdivia also collected three hits on the day as well as her career–high 13th stolen base.

CSUMB will close its 2013 season next weekend when it hosts Sonoma State for a four–game series at the Otter Sports Complex Friday and Saturday, Apr. 26–27. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
