SAN FRANCISCO — For the second consecutive day, the Cal State Monterey Bay softball bats rallied late to earn a split at San Francisco State Saturday, dropping the opener 3–0 before storming back for a 5–1 win in the nightcap. With the split, CSUMB (26–21, 14–14 CCAA) finished its ridiculous 16–game conference roadtrip 8–8 as it heads home for its final eight regular season games.
Saturday's split left SFSU at 17–27 and 9–19.
The Gators did all of their damage in the fourth inning of game one, scoring all three runs before
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) and
Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) came in to shut the door with 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief. As has been the case during CSUMB's recent run of play, eight Otters reached base in the game but the big hit never came.
They struck early for the first time in the series in Game 2 when
Vanessa Avila (Dana Point/Santiago Canyon HS) poked a 2–out single through the right side to score
Jade Agustin (Sanger HS) and give CSUMB a 1–0 lead in the second inning. The Otters then broke the game open in the fourth as RBI singles from Avila and
Skyler Valdivia (Beaumont HS) highlighted a 4–run outburst that made the lead 5–0.
That proved to be more than enough support for Clarkson, who scatted five hits and fanned five to earn her 13th win of the season.
CSUMB returns home to close the regular season with an eight games at the Otter Sports Complex, beginning with a doubleheader versus Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m.
