SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team received a pair of solid pitching performances from sophomore Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) and freshman Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) but failed to take advantage of either as UC San Diego swept a doubleheader, 2–1 and 5–2 (9 inn.), Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

UCSD catcher Caitlin Brown made Reinhardt pay for her only mistake with a third–inning home run that proved to be the difference in the opener. In the nightcap, Reinhardt's RBI single in the third and Lauren Ermitano's (Hayward/Ohlone College) run–scoring double in the fourth staked Clarkson to a 2–0 lead. But the Otters failed to score after loading the bases with no outs in the fifth, a result that came back to haunt them in the sixth.

In the Triton sixth, a pair of errors set the table for a 2–run single from Callie Grant. Though Clarkson allowed no earned runs, just five hits and struck out five through seven innings, the Otters headed to extra innings tied 2–2.

UCSD finally broke it open in the ninth, stringing together five consecutive singles to produce the three runs that decided the game.

Reinhardt finished the day 2–for–5 with four walks—two of them intentional—and has reached base safely in all 21 games to open the season. Ermitano added run–scoring hits in both games while Angelia Orozco (Clovis East HS) broke out of a mini slump with three hits in the nightcap.

CSUMB (11–10, 6–6–CCAA) takes to the road for its next eight games, beginning with a pair of doubleheaders at Humboldt State Mar. 8–9. The Otters return home to host Dominican University for a nonconference doubleheader Mar. 22.
