SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Stanislaus softball pitching staffs put out an all points bulletin for a strike zone that nobody could find Friday afternoon, combining to walk an incredible 36 batters in 14 innings as the teams split their CCAA–opening doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB took a wild first game 8-7 before Stanislaus earned the split with an 11-2 decision in the nightcap.

As the unusual total suggests, walks played integral roles in the outcomes of both games. In the opener, Stanislaus closer Randee Hindman walked Angelina Orozco (Clovis East HS) to lead off the bottom of the seventh then saw the Warriors' 7-6 lead and the game slip away when a pair of throwing errors allowed Orozco and Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) to score on a Reinhardt grounder to first.

The Warriors, meanwhile, blew open the nightcap when Reinhardt walked in a pair of runs in front of Kristan Burns' grand slam in the top of the sixth to give Stanislaus a 9-1 lead. The Otters forced the game to go the distance when Hindman came on in relief of starter Natalie Rendon (who walked seven batters in five innings herself), only to yield two walks and a hit batter before Reinhardt's bases-loaded walk gave the Otters their second run.

The teams combined to score 28 runs on just 21 hits. Orozco was the only Otter hit safely in both games, raising her hitting streak to five games by finishing the afternoon 2-for-7 with a triple. Reinhardt ran her streak of reaching base safely to 11 games while driving in a pair of runs in game two. Junior first baseman Lauren Ermitano (Hayward/Ohlone College) added her first home run of the season — and the first by any Otter in 2013 — in the opener.

Cierrah Mullins led the Stanislaus offense with three hits, including a 3-run homer in game one. Brittani Weatherford scored six run on the afternoon, thanks in large part to five walks and being hit by a pitch.

CSUMB (6-5, 1-1 CCAA) and Stanislaus (6-45, 1-1) will close their four-game series with a noon doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.
