Freshman Regan Porteous' first collegiate goal was a golden one.
BOX SCORE LOS ANGELES – In a hard fought match, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team battled its way to a 1-0 double overtime win at Cal State L.A., Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Stadium.
“We as a staff gave the team a challenge to put two good games in one weekend and they accomplished that together,” said Head Coach
Erin Reinke. “The team has set and broken records already this season and we have just began.”
The Otters (5-2-0, 3-2-0 CCAA) are off to their best start since making the move to NCAA Division II. Only seven games into the season, CSUMB has tied both the program's season and conference wins records. With the loss, CSULA slipped to 3-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in CCAA action.
Freshman
Regan Porteous tapped the ball in the empty net after CSULA's keeper Gabriela Batmani deflected freshman
Kristen Womack's (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek HS) point-blank shot in the 103rd minute.
Cal State L.A. had a 13-9 edge in shots with six coming in the first overtime period.
CSUMB had two good chances to break the game open in the first half. Womack had a shot in the eighth minute hit the post and a shot by sophomore
Hannah Cobb from close range sailed just wide in the 35th minute.
“We have a special team this season,” Reinke said. “They are willing to put the work, improve every day, and understand what a team means. There is still a lot more of the season to be played.”
The Otters wrap up their five-game road trip on Friday, Sept. 28 at Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is 3 p.m.
