Andrea Davis (San Diego, Calif./Coronado HS) notched her second goal of the week to lift the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Dominican (Calif.) University in Saturday afternoon action at Kennelly Field.
“We played well the first 26 minutes and had some very good chances but couldn't find the back of the net,” said
Head Coach Erin Reinke. “Dominican scored around the 30th minute and the team responded in a positive way in the second half by scoring two goals in the last 20 minutes. ”
The lone Penguin goal came on a header by freshman Stephanie Owens. Her score staked Dominican to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.
CSUMB's luck finally turned in the 79th minute on a ball that originated in the middle third. Senior
Brianna Baszak (Coronado HS) won possession of the ball and found fellow senior
Gabriella Bozzo (Salinas HS) as an outlet. Bozzo slipped it to junior
Shoshana Wangerin (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) on the left flank . who went 1-on-1 with Dominican's keeper and scored.
The Otters remained on the attack, scoring two minutes later when Davis drilled the ball to the back of the net from 18 yards out. Freshman
Regan Porteous (Lodi, Calif./St. Mary's HS) beat two Dominican defenders and slipped the ball back to Davis for her second assists of the season.
“It took the entire team to win today. Everyone pulled together to find a way to get the result. It sets the tone for our season,” said Reinke.
The Otters improve to 2-0 overall as they concluded non-conference action. CSUMB's conference opener is Friday, Sept. 7 against Sonoma State at the Otter Sports Complex.
