BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a dominating presence, outshooting Academy of Art 19-1 en route to a 3-1 victory on Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Otter Sports Complex.
Sophomore
Kelly Piol (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) and freshman
Kristen Womack (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek HS) both scored their first collegiate goals while senior
Andrea Davis (San Diego, Calif./Coronado HS) earned her second of her career.
CSUMB controlled much of the play in the game, especially in the first half. Piol struck first for the Otters in the 38th minute on a lead pass by Davis.
In the opening minute of the second half, Womack made it 2-0 when she finished an attack that came up the left side. Freshman
Regan Porteous (San Diego, Calif./Coronado HS) carried the ball along the sideline and launched a lead pass to Womack. After beating a defender, Womack then drove a low ball to the far corner of the net.
Art U's Rea Laudat put the Urban Knights on the board in the 61st minute after scrambling past CSUMB keeper
Kendra Gillio (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) and tapping the ball past the goal line.
Davis converted on a penalty kick after Womack was taken down by an Urban Knight defender inside the box in the 75th minute.
Next up for the Otters is a road match at Dominican University on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. It will be the Penguins' season opener after Humboldt State canceled its Thursday game due to a university self-imposed suspension.
