SEASIDE, Calif. — For the first time this season, five Otters reached double figures and two recorded double–doubles in a game Friday night, but it wasn't enough as hot–shooting UC San Diego pulled away early to take an 80–67 decision in The Kelp Bed.
UCSD used a 25–7 run in the latter stages of the first half to turn a tenuous 15–13 lead into a 38–22 lead that wouldn't be challenged. The Otters never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Junior center
Kevin Loustale (Chico HS/Shasta College) recorded a 14–point, 11–rebound double–double to lead CSUMB. Junior forward
Derrick Anderson (Pittsburg HS) scored all 12 of his points in the second half and added 10
rebounds of his own. They were the second double–doubles of the season for both players.
The Otters also got 14 points off the bench from
Geoff McIntosh (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS), 13 points from
James Thomas (Castro Valley/Bishop O'Dowd) and 10 points from
Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS), who scored in double figures for the 10th consecutive game.
Tyler McGrath led UCSD with 21 points. Christian Hatch and McKenzie McCullough also reached double figures with 18 and 15 points respectively.
CSUMB returns to action by hosting Cal State San Bernardino in the final Otter home game of the 2011–12 season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
