Freshman Regan Proteous scores winning goal to lift Otters to 1-0 victory.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. – On Sept. 14, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer program picked up its first-ever victory over then No. 14 Chico State at Wildcat Field.
On Sunday, the Otters reached another milestone for the first time ever at Otter Sports Complex, 1-0, to sweep the Wildcats. The victory also brings CSUMB's overall wins to six with four being against CCAA opponents, passing the program's records in both categories since moving to the NCAA Division II level.
After a scoreless first half, freshman
Regan Porteous took a lead pass to get behind two defenders from senior
Korie Soares. Porteous went one-on-one with Wildcat keeper Brianna Furner and drilled the ball to the right corner in the 68th minute. This marks the second goal for Porteous this season, one shy of senior
Andrea Davis as the top Otter scorer of 2012.
The Otter bench and fans held their breath in the 63rd minute when senior
Diana Zambrano (La Puente, Calif./Mt. SA) charged out to stop Chico's Shelby Dunlap. The shot got past Zambrano, but Otter senior defender
Lacey Atkinson cleared the ball to prevent the equalizer.
Zambrano notched four saves including a 2-on-1 diving block to stop Chico State's leading scorer Scotie Walker in the 56th minute. It as Zambrano's third shutout of the season. Earlier this season, Zambrano recorded shutouts at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.
CSUMB outshot the Wildcats 13-5, with nine being on target. Freshman
Kristen Womack had a game-high three shots.
The Otters (6-5, 4-5 CCAA) get little rest before hosting Humboldt State on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Otter Sports Complex at 12:30 p.m.
