Senior Diana Zambrano makes a great save earlier this season.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team battled No. 8 Cal State Stanislaus into double-overtime Friday before a goal by Bernie Bettencourt with time winding down won the game 2-1 for the Warriors.
"The team played extremely well despite the loss," said Head Coach
Erin Reinke. "They continue to learn what it's going to take to be successful in this tough conference. Stanislaus is a well experienced team who knows how to find a way to win. We had many good solid chances to win the game but came up short."
The Otters (5-5, 3-5 CCAA) offense kept attacking the nationally-ranked team, out-shooting the Warriors 12-9.
The Warriors (10-1, 6-1 CCAA) got on the board first, scoring on a Katelyn Nebesnick pass from 20 yards out that Allie Dugan flipped over Otter keeper
Diana Zambrano's (La Puente, Calif./Mt. SAC) head.
In the 68th minute, senior
Korie Soares tapped the ball past the goalline after Stanislaus had cleared the corner kick threat and the Otters staged another attack.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, CSUMB had a chance to pull off the upset when Soares got out front of the defense on a breakaway opportunity. Warrior keeper Mille Brown was able to halt the run.
The Warrior golden goal came with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime period. Nebesnick earned another assist after crossing the ball to Bernie Bettencourt that gave her an open net to score.
Zambrano racked up five saves including a diving one in the 83rd minutes to stop Tina Benson's shot.
Seniors
Lindsey Gatlin and Soares each had two shots on goal.
"We need to find a way to be consistent in our play as a team," Reinke said. "Once we can grasp that, the results will be more in our favor."
The Otters continue their three-game homestand, hosting Chico State Sunday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. Earlier this season, CSUMB earned a 2-1 overtime win over the Wildcats in Chico.
