SEASIDE, Calif. -- Off to its best conference start ever, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer (3–3–1 overall, 3–2–1 CCAA) team will head to Southern California in search of its first road victory this weekend. The Otters play at UC San Diego (4–4–0, 3–3–0) Friday, Sept. 30 and at Cal State San Bernardino (2–5–0, 1–5–0) Sunday, Oct. 1.
The Otters are coming off a weekend in which they defeated two (then) regionally ranked teams at the Otter Sports Complex. They upended Chico State — which also was receiving votes in the national rankings — 2–1 before shutting out then No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus 2–0.
Junior midfielder
Max Brixey (Truckee HS) became the first player in the insanely balanced Otter attack to score a second goal this season when he netted the match winner against Cal State Stanislaus. Brixey tops the scoring charts with two goals and five points. Six other players have one goal apiece while eight players share the eight assists.
In goal, senior
Sam Campanelli (Palmdale/Highland HS) has played every minute and been outstanding in the process. He posted his second shutout of the season, lowering his goals against average to 0.94.
Otter Men's Soccer Odds & Ends
WINNING WAYS: At 3–2–1 in conference play, the Otters are off to their best ever CCAA start after six matches. The 2005 team started 3–3–0. With a tie Friday, they would match the 2007 team for the best overall start (3–2–2 in 2007).
HOW THE NORTH WAS WON: The Otters enter the week sitting in second place in the tight CCAA North Division race. Sonoma State leads with 12 points; CSUMB and Chico sit in second with 10 points while Cal State Stanislaus is fourth with nine points.
ROAD SWEET ROAD: While the Otters remained unbeaten at home (3–0–1) last weekend, they'll need to find some points on the road to stay in the CCAA Tournament picture. The Otters are 0–3 away from the OSC this season and in the middle of an 0–13 away streak.
