ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team was playing with the field tilted in its favor for the first hour–plus of Friday's CCAA match at Humboldt State. But the 64th minute saw sophomore midfielder Jon Decker (Simi Valley/Royal HS) sent off and the 67th minute saw Humboldt net the game's lone goal in a 1–0 Otter defeat at Arcata's College Creek Field.
Though shot totals were even at 8–8 through the first half, the Otters accumulated an incredible nine corner kicks in the period. But they couldn't translate that positional advantage into offense, a factor that proved pivotal as the match unfolded.
After referee James Sug sent Decker off with a second yellow card, Humboldt responded quickly with a pair of shots, including Brian Holmes' first goal of the season at the 66:51 mark. Even down a man, the Otters pressed forward and earned a pair of corners in the final minutes, but they never could find the equalizer.
Ten different Otters took shots Friday, led by freshman forward
George Plakorus (Columbia, Mo./UAB) with three. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Campanelli (Palmdale/Highland HS) made six saves.
The Otters (1–2–1 overall, 1–1–1 CCAA) will look to pick up their first road win of the season Sunday when they head south to take on traditional power Sonoma State.
