SEASIDE, Calif. -- After a convincing 4–1 win at William Jessup University to open the 2011 season, it was close but no cigar for the Otter women's soccer team last weekend as mere moments stood between it and a perfect opening to its CCAA campaign.
The Otters thoroughly out–played 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifier San Francisco State only to see any share of the spoils stolen by a Gator free kick with less than two minutes remaining in overtime. SFSU pulled out the 1–0 win. Sunday, the Otters took a first–half lead against Cal State East Bay before the Pioneers came back to tie then score the match winner less than seven minutes from time in a 2–1 defeat.
“We are learning everyday on how to be a better team,” says Head Coach
Erin Reinke. “It's hard to play three games in five days for any team at the collegiate level. We will get back after it this week and get ready for Humboldt and Sonoma this weekend.”
Otter Women's Soccer Odds & Ends
4 x 4: The four–goal explosion against William Jessup last week tied the school record for most goals by the women's soccer team. You have to go all the way back to Oct. 29, 2005 to find the only other time it happened (in a 4–0 win over Embry–Riddle). That's a span of 98 matches.
A 2–FER: Junior forward
Marlina Massagli (Alta Loma/Los Osos HS) enjoyed the first two–goal match of her career in the win over William Jessup. That ties the Otter record for goals in a match. She becomes the sixth Otter to do it and the first since then freshman
Jessica Pardo (Fresno/Bullard HS) turned the trick in a 2–1 win at San Francisco State on Oct. 23, 2009.The Otters will have their work cut out for them as they look to pick up their first CCAA win of the season at a pair of venues at which they have yet to post a victory. CSUMB will be at Humboldt State Friday (Sept. 16) and at Sonoma State Sunday (Sept. 18).
