Otters Take First Of Two From Chico State

CHICO, Calif.
– It took extra innings for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to win the series opener 4-3 over the Chico State Wildcats.  In the nightcap, the Wildcats offense recorded an 11-1 victory in 4.5 innings.

Freshman #Brittany Alvarado# recorded two doubles and two RBI while senior #Shannon Bailey# also notched two hits on the day.

The Otters conclude their 2011 regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.




Game 1: CSUMB 4, Chico State 3; 12 innings

Alvarado hit the game winning double in the top of the 12th to give CSUMB the 4-3 victory.

In the first inning, Chico State took a 1-0 lead after scoring on a wild pitch.

CSUMB knotted it in the next frame on Alvarado's first double of the game that scored junior #Jackie Serna# who led off with a walk.

Junior #Jamie Moon#'s homer over the left field fence in the third put CSUMB in the lead at 2-1.

Four straight singles by the Wildcats evened the score once again, 2-2.

In the fourth, Serna doubled down the left line to begin the inning.  Bailey laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Serna to third and freshman #Danielle Onken#'s sacrifice fly to score Serna.

With the Otters leading 3-2, Chico State scored in the seventh on a two-out single to force extra innings.

Solid pitching by senior #Diane Ortiz# and Chico State's Sam Baker resulted in four-inning scoring drought.  The Otters broke through in the top of the 12th when Bailey led off with a single.  Onken put down a sacrifice bunt to advance junior #Caitlin Wallace#, who came in to pinch run for Bailey.  Alvarado stepped up with a double to left field to give CSUMB a 4-3 lead.

Ortiz retired three straight batters to clinch the victory.

The Wildcats scored eight runs in the first two innings and added three more in the bottom of the fourth.

CSUMB's lone run came in the top of the fourth on Bailey's RBI single to right center.
