Otters Drop Series Opener To Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif.
– In what could only be described as a home run derby doubleheader, the Cal State Monterey Bay and Humboldt State softball teams combined for nine home runs in 11 and half innings of play. The Otters fell 11-8 in the opening game to the Lumberjacks and were trailing 12-8 in the nightcap before the umpires called the game due to darkness.

Senior #Shae Olds# broke the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) career home run record in the second game, clinching her 42nd homer while wearing a CSUMB jersey. Freshman #Danielle Onken# hit her first collegiate home run while junior #Jackie Serna# recorded her ninth of the season.  Senior #Shannon Bailey# also went yard in the first game.

The Otters racked up five run in their first at-bat with Olds 2 RBI single and Serna's three-run homer.  

Humboldt State closed the gap to 5-4 due to a three-run homer by Felicia Viveiros and Kristen Nouzovsky's solo home run.

The Lumberjacks took their first lead of the game after scoring three runs in the second inning.   

Bailey's solo home run in the third inning and her 2 RBI single in the fourth put the Otters back in the lead at 8-7.

The Lumberjacks hit three home runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win at 11-8.

The Lumberjacks held a 7-0 lead going into the fourth inning when CSUMB scored six runs on four hits that included Onken's home run.

The Otters took a 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth on the two-run homer by Olds.

The Lumberjacks retook the lead in their side of the fifth with five runs on three hits and two CSUMB errors.   The game was halted at this point due to darkness.

The Otters tied the game on Serna's grand slam in the seventh inning.

Both teams notched a run in the eighth. 

In the ninth inning, Olds led off with a double to center field. Pinch running for Olds, junior #Caydi Dommeyer# moved to third and scored on wild pitches to make it 14-13.

Humboldt State's Geneva Perrine hti a walk-off double to give the Lumberjacks the victory, 15-14.
