Otters Go 2-1 On Opening Day Of Tournament

TURLOCK, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team went 2-1 on the opening day of the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on Friday at Pedretti Park.

Freshman #Danielle Onken# led the Otters today, going 4-for-7 with a double and a run.  Senior #Shannon Bailey# and sophomore #Angelina Orozco# also had strong showing with four hits each.

The Otters match-up against Dominican (1-23) at 2 p.m. and conclude pool play against No.22 Hawaii Pacific at 6 p.m.

Game 1: CSUMB 8, WOU 1

A seven-run sixth inning gave the Otters the victory in their tournament opener.  

CSUMB took a one-run lead in the first inning on Olds's two-out double off the right field fence.  The Wolves evened the score on a CSUMB error in the fourth.

The Otters turned on their guns in the sixth, posting seven runs on four hits. The highlight of the inning was Orozco's base clearing triple to right field.

Game 2: GCU 9, CSUMB 5

Grand Canyon got on the board in the first inning with one run off two hits.  

CSUMB knotted it at one apiece on junior Jamie Moon's RBI double that scored Orozco.

The Lopes took advantage of two CSUMB errors by scoring four runs in their side of the third.

The Otters closed the gap to 5-4 in the top of the fourth with three runs on one hit.  After junior #Jackie Sern and Bailey drew back-to-back walks, freshman #Brittany Alvarado# loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Onken singled through the left side and then advanced to second on a throwing error on GCU's left fielder, scoring Bailey and Serna. Orozco's grounder to first plated Alvarado.

Both teams recorded a run in their following at bat to make it 6-5 and GCU extended its lead to 9-5 with three runs in the sixth.

The Otters scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to clinch the 3-2 victory over Montana State Billings in the nightcap of the tournament on Friday.
