SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament with a 62-45 win over Sonoma State at the Kelp Bed.
The Otters improve to 25-2 overall while the Seawolves conclude their 2010-11 season at 9-18.
Senior #London Houchin# led all scorers with 16 points with two from behind the arc. Sophomore #Jessica Fontenette# contributed 12 points, four assists and two steals. Senior #Michelle Santizo# added 11 points and three assists. Senior #Julie Heurung# pulled down a team-high seven rebounds on top of her eight points and three steals.
The Otters ended the opening half with a 16-2 run to take a 33-23 lead into the locker room. CSUMB's defense held the Seawolves scoreless from the field during that time as Sonoma State's two points came from free throws.
For the 16th time this season, Otters held their opponents to less than 50 points proving why they are No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense. CSUMB shot 40 percent from the field while holding the Seawolves to 34.8 percent.
The Otters out-rebounded Sonoma State 32-28 and shot 88.9 percent (16-for-18) from the charity stripe. The Seawolves went 9-for-18 from the free throw line.
The Seawolves were led by Jacklyn Bisordi's 12 points. Kristina Fahey added eight points and five rebounds.
The Otters move on to the CCAA Tournament Semi-Finals, taking on fourth-seeded Cal State San Bernardino at 8 p.m. on Cal State East Bay's campus in Hayward.
