PHOENIX – The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team began 2011 with a split on the first day of the Grand Canyon Invitational at Quail Run. The Otters dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 23 Midwestern State before shutting out host Grand Canyon 5-0 Friday afternoon.
For the day, senior #Shae Olds# and junior #Jackie Serna# each went 3-for-6 with two runs, including a home run.
On Saturday, the Otters take on Western New Mexico at 11 a.m. followed by a rematch against Midwestern State at 1:30 p.m.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on McKenzie Sicker's double.
CSUMB posted a single run in both the fourth and sixth innings on junior
Audriana Gutierrez's double and a home run by Serena.
After a lone run in the fourth, MSU secured the victory with three runs on four hits.
Senior #Diane Ortiz# took the loss for CSUMB, giving up six hits and eight walks in six innings of work.

Gutierrez crushed a two-run homer after sophomore #Angelina Orozco# leadoff off the game with a single.
Sophomore #Jamie Moon# extended the Otters 2-0 lead with a home run to open the second inning.
With one out in the sixth inning, Olds went long over the center field. After Serna doubled to left field, Moon followed with a RBI double and was called out after over running second.
Freshman #Kylie Linnane# pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and striking out seven batters.
