TURLOCK, Calif. – Senior #Julie Heurung# recorded a career-high 21 points and five assists to lead Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team to an 83-71 victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night at Warrior Arena.
The Otters continue to dominate the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with an 11-0 conference record and 15-0 overall. Stanislaus falls to 7-8, 5-6 in CCAA play.
Heurung shot an impressive 8-for-9 from the field with one 3-pointer in the opening half. Four other CSUMB players joined Heurung in double-digits with junior #Holly Holcomb# knocking down 15 points. Junior #Shonetta Crain-Williams# contributed 14 points and senior #LaShawn Johnson# added 12 points. Johnson, Heurung and junior #Erika Ward# pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
The Otters and Warriors traded leads in the first half six minute mark when the Warriors took their largest lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Trisha Werre to make it 37-31.
CSUMB responded with a 10-0 run capped by junior #Brandi Stephen#'s layup with 2:06 on the clock.
The Otters held a 44-42 lead at the half despite committing nine turnovers to Stanislaus' four.
Heurung opened the second half with two buckets in the first minute and half. A 3-pointer by Andreanna Marshall and Jeanette Rowe's layup closed the gap to 48-47, but that is the closest the Warriors will get in the second half.
As the CCAA foul leaders, the Warriors finished with 32 to CSUMB's 21 on the night. The Otters won the battle of the boards, 36-27. CSUMB shot 53.3 percent from the field, a season-high against conference opponents. The Otters dropped eight 3-pointers with seven coming in the first half.
With 45 trips to the charity stripe, the Otters only connected on 27 with Crain-Williams going 8-for-10.
The Otters will close out the first half of conference play on Saturday night at Chico State. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
