ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team held on for a 63-55 victory over Sonoma State to pick up its 14th victory of the season and remain undefeated.
The Otters once again was able to spread out their offense with seven players scoring six or more points. Senior #London Houchin# led CSUMB, scoring a career-high 17 points. Senior #Julie Heurung# notched nine points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
The Otters came out on fire by taking a 30-8 lead in the first 12 minutes. CSUMB's defense held the Seawolves off the scoreboard until the 15th minute when Aly Henington connected on a jumper.
Sonoma rallied back with a 16-4 run, cutting CSUMB lead to 34-24 at the halftime break.
The Otters were able to hold on to the lead as the Seawolves battled back by cutting the lead to five points with 29 seconds on the clock.
Clutch free-throws in the final seconds by Houchin secured the Otters their 14th victory of the season.
CSUMB out-rebounded the Seawolves, 41-30 while shooting 48.9 percent from the field.
The Seawolves had three players in double-digits with Henington leading the way with 14 points.
The Otters are 1-of-4 NCAA Division II teams undefeated in the nation as No. 1 Delta State, No. 3 Fort Lewis and Johnson C Smith picked up losses this weekend.
CSUMB travels to Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Jan. 21 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
