ARCATA, Calif.
– Senior #Julie Heurung# scored 12 points and had seven rebounds and four blocked shots as the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team held off Humboldt State, 72-64, on Thursday night.

"Humboldt is the toughest place to play in the CCAA," said head coach #Renee Jimenez#. "It's also one of the most fun places to win on the road!"

The Otters remain No. 1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standing with an 8-0 conference record and 13-0 overall.  Humboldt drops to 6-7, 3-6 in conference action.

Three other Otters finished in double-digits with junior #Erika Ward# notching 12 points. Sophomore #Holly Holcomb# added 11 points, four rebounds and four steals. Senior #LaShawn Johnson# finished with 10 points and four rebounds.   Senior #Michelle Santizo# dished out five assists on top of her seven points.

CSUMB dominated in the first five minutes of the game, taking a 20-9 by going 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Jacks closed the gap to 28-27 on a 6-0 run, but Johnson's back-to-back jumpers put the Otters up 32-27.

CSUMB took a 33-29 lead into the locker rooms at the half time break.

After Heurung's layup at 15:23, the Otters maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

CSUMB notched seven blocked shots, but was outrebounded 40 to 36.  The Otters shot 45 percent from the field (26-of-58) and behind the 3-point line (5-of-11).

"I thought we did a great job on controlling the game from the the opening tip," Jimenez said. "(Assistant) Coach (Tina) Samaniego put togther a great scout and I thought our guys executed the game plan as well as they ever have. We need to do a better job of dominating the game for 40 minutes but overall I was pleased with our poise and the way we stayed together as a team."

The Otters travel to Sonoma State on Saturday, Jan. 15 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.  The Seawolves picked up their first home victory of the season tonight against the Gators of San Francisco State, 46-37.
