Second Half Surge Haunts Otters

ARCATA, Calif.
– Despite a strong start, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team dropped a 94-66 decision to Humboldt State on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena.

The Otters fall to 4-9 overall and 2-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play while the Jacks  (12-1, 8-1) remain tied for first in the conference standings with No. 10 Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Sophomore #Davion Berry# recorded his first double-double of the year, finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds.  Senior #Darroll Phillips# added 14 points and senior #Warren Freeman# scored seven points coming off the bench.

The Jacks took a quick lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, with the Otters on their heels. Phillips swished a 3-pointer with 6:20 remaining in the first half to give CSUMB would would be their largest lead of the game, 25-23. HSU responded with an 18-4 run to take a 46-33 advantage to the locker room.

The second half was dominated by the Jacks as they expanded on their lead by shooting 52.8 percent from the field.

The Otters lost the battle of the boards, 42-25, yet only recorded 10 turnovers for their second lowest of the season.

Humboldt State's Brian Morris set a new school record with 50 points in a single game and was only one rebound shy of a double-double.  Randy Hunter added 13 points and nine boards.

CSUMB takes a day off before traveling to Rohnert Park on Saturday, Jan. 15 to take on Sonoma State.  Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
