Otters Win Sixth Series

CSUMB split doubleheader with UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team edged UC San Diego, 5-4, in the series closer at Triton Field on Saturday.  The Otters fell 2-1 in a pitching duel nine-inning first game.

The Otters improve to 28-16 overall and 21-11 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while the Tritons dropped to 28-18, 18-14 in conference play.

Senior #Diane Ortiz#, who the decision for all four games, picked up her 14th win of the season in the finale.  She threw 11 and one-third innings, allowing only four hits, one earned run and striking out six batters.

Senior #Niki Ames# led the Otters with three hits, two of them doubles, along with three runs. Sophomore #Jamie Moon# recorded her second home run of the season.

The Otters return home next weekend for their final series of the season, hosting Cal State East Bay.

The Otters scored their lone run in the top of the fourth. Ames leadoff the inning with a double to center field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior #Shae Olds#. Moon drove Ames in with a single to left center to take a 1-0 lead.

The Tritons tied the game in the sixth inning when Sarah Woofter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

UCSD's Katrin Gabriel hit a walk-off triple to score Colleen Moen who was rewarded first after four straight balls.

The Tritons came out strong in the first inning, scoring four runs on two hits and taking advantage of three CSUMB errors.

Moon's two-run homer put the Otters on the board in the top of the fourth inning, making it 4-2 UCSD.

CSUMB added two more runs in the next inning to tie the game at 4-4. Ames hit a RBI single to score freshman #Angelina Orozco#. Senior #Jenny Montez# scored when UCSD's third baseman committed an error on Old's grounder.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Ames doubled down the left line. Olds followed with a single to left center to score the winning run.
