TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team fell to the Lopes of Grand Canyon University, 13-5, in the first round of the silver bracket in the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus Sunday.
Freshman #Angelina Orozco# got the Otters out strong in the first inning, leading off with a triple off the center field wall. Senior #Jenny Montez# followed with a single to right side to score Orozco. Junior #Shae Olds# drew a full-count walk and then crossed the plate with Montez after GCU's pitcher over threw first on junior #Marisa Trujillo#'s ground out. The Otters ended their first at-bat with a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, GCU's Teddy Barry homered down the left line to close the gap to 3-2.
After a scoreless second inning, the Otters added another run in the third. After leading off with a double down the right field line, Montez advanced to third on a ground out by Olds and scored on a bad throw for an attempted double play.
The Lopes scored six runs on three hits and three CSUMB errors to take a 8-4 lead after three innings.
GCU continued to rack up runs, scoring three more runs in the fourth inning on three hits and one CSUMB error.
CSUMB managed to score one more run in the fifth inning when Trujillo connected on a bases loaded single up the middle to make it 11-5 after 4 1/2.
The Lopes nabbed two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 13-5 and to end the game on account of the eight-run rule.
The Otters return conference play on Friday to kickoff a four-game series against the San Francisco State Gators. First pitch is 12 p.m.
Note: Freshman #Angelina Orozco# was selected to the All-Tournament team after having an outstanding weekend. She went 11-for-18 (.611) with a double and a triple. Orozco crossed the plate five times for the Otters while batting in two runners.
