Otters Upset No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific, Finish 2-1 On Day One

TURLOCK, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team pulled off a 5-4 upset over No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific University in its first game of the Tournament of Champions on Friday afternoon. In the doubleheader nightcap, the Otters fell 5-0 to Central Washington before rebounding with an 8-0 six inning shutout against Northwest Nazarene.

The Otters are back on the field on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. when they take on Western Oregon at Warrior Field.  CSUMB's final game of pool play is at 3:45 p.m. against Montana State-Billings.

CSUMB's bats caught on fire in the second inning, racking up four runs on four hits and two HPU errors.  Junior #Shae Olds# led off with a grounder to third base but reached first on an error.  sophomore #Jessica Moon# followed with a double down the left line. Junior #Marisa Trujillo# hit a 2 RBI single to right center.  Freshman #Angelina Orozco# singled to the pitcher to put runners at the corners.  Senior #Niki Ames# connected on a RBI single up the middle to end the Otter scoring at 4-0.

The Otters added one more run in the top of the third when junior #Cat Sampson# singled to left field to score  Moon after reaching first on a leadoff single.

The Sea Warriors jumped on the board in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on three hits and a CSUMB error.

HPU challenged the Otters in the bottom seventh.  With one out and bases loaded, Toriano hit into fielder's choice. CSUMB ran down the trail runner between second and third as well as the lead runner heading home.  

Moon led the Otters, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Trujillo drove in two runs.

Junior #Diane Ortiz# racked up her ninth victory of the season giving up four runs, two of them earned.

Garcia recorded the Otters lone hit of the game as Central Washington's ace Lauren Hadenfield notched 14 strikeouts.

The Otters got their bats back in the final game of the day, racking up nine hits. Orozco led the Otters, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and a RBI.

CSUMB took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on four hits and one NNU error. The Otters added four more runs in the sixth capped by a walk-off two-run single by pinch hitter Ortiz.
