SEASIDE, Calif. – Despite only combining for six hits in Friday's doubleheader, the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team pulled out victories in both games to the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State, 1-0 and 5-2, at the Otter Softball Field.
Junior #Shae Olds# led the Otters with two hits including a double in the opener. Junior #Diane Ortiz# threw her fifth shutout to win game one.
Otters complete the four-game series with a doubleheader against the Lumberjacks on Saturday, March 20. First pitch is 11 a.m.
GAME 1

The game's lone run came in the second inning on aggressive base running. Olds hit a leadoff double down the left line to get things started for the Otters. Junior #Cat Sampson# laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner #Skyler Valdivia# to third. Junior #Marisa Trujillo# hit into a fielder's choice and Valdivia slid around the catcher to touch home plate.
Ortiz notched her sixth victory of the season, allowing four hits while striking out four batters.
GAME 2

The Otters once again got on the board in the second inning, scoring two runs on two errors. Trujillo's ground ball to shortstop took a bad hop for an error and resulted in her to getting to second. After Valdivia entered as a pinch runner for Trujillo, sophomore #Jamie Moon# drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Another shortstop error, this time a bad throw to first, scored Valdivia and Moon to give the Otters a 2-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as the Lumberjacks scored two runs in their side of the inning. Two consecutive singles and hit batter loaded the bases with only one out. #Chrissy Stalf# singled to center field to score the first run and #Felicia Viverios# connected on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Humboldt had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning when senior #Jenny Montez# blasted a triple to right field, scoring sophomore #Caydi Dommeyer# who reached on a walk. Senior #Niki Ames# connected on a sacrifice fly to center to bring Montez across the plate.
The Otter added an insurance run in the sixth inning when freshman pinch hitter #Amanda Good# singled to center field to score Moon from second.
The Lumberjacks attempted a rally in the top of the seventh with two runners in scoring position with only one out. Ortiz entered in relief to force a line out and a ground out to end the game at 5-2 Otters.
Junior #Nicole Garcia# improved her record to 5-1, giving up only two runs on six hits.
