ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Junior #Diane Ortiz# nabbed her fifth victory, fourth shutout, to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State in the four-game series opener. The Seawolves came back in the nightcap with a walk-off homer in extra innings to win 3-2 to earn a split.
Junior #Shae Olds# lead the Otters with three hits and one RBI.
The Otters (13-5, 11-3 CCAA) and the Seawolves (16-5, 11-3 CCAA), both in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings, close out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
GAME 1

The lone run of the game came in the third inning. Senior #Niki Ames# reached first on a throwing error by SSU's third baseman and advanced to second. A ground out by junior #Channing Peebles# moved junior #Niki Ames# to third. Senior #Jenny Montez# hit into a fielder's choice to score Ames.
Sonoma State's best chance came in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Kayla Ledford grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Ortiz recorded her fourth shutout by throwing a complete game, striking out three batters and giving up four hits.
GAME 2

The Otters took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on two hits and two Sonoma State errors. Olds singled through the left side to score freshman #Angelina Orozco# who reached first on an error. Montez, who followed Orozco with a single to left field, scored on a dropped fly by SSU's leftfielder.
In the fourth, Rochelle Vanyi homered to put Sonoma State on the board.
The Seawolves tied the game up at 2-2 with one out in the seventh, scoring on an error by Ames.
In the bottom of the eighth, lead-off batter Simone Brandalise hit a walk-off homer to give the Seawolves a 3-2 victory.
