SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay softball won the opening home games of its doubleheader against Chico State, 6-4 and 8-0, on Friday at Otter Softball Field.
Junior #Marisa Trujillo# went 4-for-6 on the day with five RBI and one run scored. Junior right-handed pitcher #Diane Ortiz# threw a one-hit shutout to get the win in the nightcap.
GAME 1 - CSUMB 6, Chico State 4

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, junior #Shannon Bailey# drew four balls for the walk. Trujillo singled up the middle to advance Bailey to third. Freshman #Skyler Valdivia# entered to run for Trujillo, resulting in her first stolen base of the year. On a ground out to second, Bailey scored while advancing Valdivia to third. Valdivia scored on the squeeze off the bat of senior second basemen #Jenny Montez#. Junior #Nicole Garcia# singled up the middle to bring Montez across the plate.
Chico State tied the game up in the top of the sixth. With a runner on second, sophomore Rachel Failla hit a two-run home run over the left field fence.
The tie didn't last long as the Otters struck back by putting three runs on the board. CSUMB took advantage when the Wildcats combined for two errors. Trujillo singled up the middle, scoring senior
Arleen Costa, pinching running for Bailey on second. Freshmen
Angelina Orozco doubled to scoring Trujillo from second. Orozco scored the last run for the Otters on a wild pitch.
Trujillo went 2-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored. Orozco batted in two runs and scored one.
GAME 2 - CSUMB 8, Chico State 0

In game two, the Otters got off to a strong start with a two-run shot over the center field wall on a full-count, off the bat of junior catcher #Shae Olds# for her fifth home run of the season.
CSUMB opened it up in the bottom of the third, with three runs off four hits.
The Otters put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The inning started with Montez singling through the left side. Sophomore #Jamie Moon# doubled down the left field line, advancing Montez to third. Olds was intentionally walked to load the bases. Trujillo's single pushed across Montez and Moon to improve the score to 7-0.
In the bottom of fifth, CSUMB posted another run. Senior #Niki Ames# singled through the left side. Ames stole second. She then advanced to third when Moon reached on an error by Chico State's third baseman Courtney Brock. Garcia hit a walk-off single down the right field line to give the Otters the final run of the day.
CSUMB out hit the Wildcats 10-1. Ames went 2-for-3, one stolen base and one run scored. Moon went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The two teams will face off once again on the Otters home turf, on Saturday, Feb. 20, starting at 12 p.m. for the conclusion of the CCAA match-up.
