CSUMB Sweeps Cal State Stanislaus In Opening Doubleheader

TURLOCK, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team started the conference season off with a bang, sweeping Cal State Stanislaus in the opening games of the four-game series by the identical score of 12-3.

The Otters improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Warriors drop to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2 in CCAA action.

"I am pleased to start conference with two wins," said head coach #Andrea Kenney#. "It is tough early in the season and we will work hard to improve each week."

In the two games, the Otters cranked out three home runs, 11 doubles and two triples out of their 24 hits. As a team, CSUMB hit .453 with 19 RBI and 24 runs while only striking out twice.

Senior #Jenny Montez# and junior #Nicole Garcia# each went 4-for-7 at the plate for the Otters. Junior #Shae Olds# knocked out a home run in both games while junior #Channing Peebles# recorded her first of the season in the night cap.  

CSUMB got on the board right off the bat in the opener, with three hits recorded by sophomore #Jamie Moon#, Garcia, and Olds.

The Otters exploded in the second inning with eight runs. CSUMB batted through the line-up and strung together seven hits.

CSUMB added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Junior #Shannon Bailey# and Montez hit back-to-back doubles to start off the inning. With one out, Garcia doubled to right center to bring Montez across the plate.

In the nightcap, the Otters started off strong with two runs put on the board in the first.

The Otters added two more runs in the second, starting with a rip to center field by junior third basemen #Cat Sampson#. Peebles advanced Sampson to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Montez watched four balls go by. Moon tripled scoring both runners.

The third was packed full of action with Olds's homer to get the Otters started. Senior shortstop #Niki Ames# singled to right field. Sampson followed with a double to right center scoring Ames. CSUMB put together five hits for four runs to complete the inning.

In the last two innings the Otters posted more four runs on four hits.

CSUMB will venture back to Warrior Stadium, Saturday, Feb. 13 at noon to continue the first weekend of CCAA play.
