SAN FRANCISCO – In their fifth consecutive road game, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team battled until the end, but fell short to the San Francisco State Gators, 68-66, on Wednesday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.
Senior #Sean Jergo# and freshman #Brandon Ward# led the Otters with 13 points. Junior #Jamelle Tolliver# scored 10 of the 35 points that the CSUMB bench totaled. Jergo was one rebound away from a double-double, finishing with a team-high nine rebounds.
After eight tied scores and seven lead changes, Jergo made both of his free throws to tie the game, 31-31, into the break.
The first seven minutes of the second half resembled the first half until SF State pulled away with a 9-0 run with 4:43 remaining, 55-48.
With a 64-55 SF State lead with only 49 seconds on the clock, the Otters attempted a strong comeback. Ward hit a jumper only to see the SF State's Phoenix O'Rourke make one of two free throws, 65-57. Ward and freshman #Jeremiah Campbell# each made a pair of free throws to cut the gap to 65-61 with 28 seconds left.
Campbell sunk a 3-pointer sandwiched between a single free throw by SF State's Nefi Perdomo and O'Rourke to make it 67-64.
Senior #Shaun Williams# layup with 12 seconds on the clock cut the lead to a single point, 67-66.
The Gators clinched 68-66 victory with a final free throw by O'Rourke.
SF State was led by Tim Pratt with a game-high 20 points, while Marquel Hoskins notched a double-double on 14 points and 15 rebounds.
The Otters begin their final homestand of four games on Friday with a CCAA match-up against Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Otter Sports center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
