SAN FRANCISCO – Junior #Julie Heurung# nabbed her second consecutive double-double, but the Otter women's basketball team saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night. Cal State Monterey Bay dropped a 55-52 decision the Gators of San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.
Heurung finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds on top of two blocked shots. Senior guard #Helen Suarez# recorded 11 points and classmate
Veronica Williams added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Gators led most of the first half, with their largest lead coming in the seventh minute on a jumper by Donisha Tate at 20-13.
A steal by red-shirt freshman Britnea Lewis resulted in a Heurung layup to close the Gator lead to 24-23, but SF State connected on a 3-pointer to take a 27-23 advantage into the break.
The Gators opened the second half with a 12-4 run, extending their lead to 41-27. The Otters rallied back with a 15-5 run themselves. A Williams 3-pointer put the Otters over the top with three minutes remaining at 48-46.
A short jumper by Tate tied the game at 48-48 with 2:48 on the clock.
A SF State foul sends Saurez to the line, where she made the front-end of her two shot and giving the Otters back the lead at 49-48.
From there, the game came down to made and missed free throws.
The Otters went 3-for-6 while SF State finished 5-for-8 at the charity stripe.
CSUMB went to the line 27 times, only making 14 for a 57.1 percentage.
The Otters return home on Friday, Feb. 12, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Kelp Bed. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
