SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball recorded a 92-91 double overtime victory over UC San Diego on Friday night at the Kelp Bed.
Five Otters recorded double-digits with senior #Michelle Santizo# leading the pack with 19 points, four from beyond the 3-point arc. Senior #LaShawn Johnson# contributed 18 points while #Shonetta Crain-Williams# added 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior #Erika Ward# dished out five assists on top of her 10 points. Senior #Julie Heurung# pulled down seven rebounds to add to her 13 points.
The Tritons were led by Lauren Freidenberg's 27 points and eight rebounds. Chelsea Carlisle added 23 points while Emily Osga knocked down 18 points.
After falling behind quickly at the beginning of the first half, the Otters came charging back to hold a 36-32 lead at the halftime break.
The score was tied 71-71 at the end of regulation after CSUMB saw its 15 point lead (61-46) slip away after UCSD went on a 25-10 run in the final 12 minutes.
Santizo opened the first OT with a triple to put the Otters up 74-71, but the Tritons came back to take a 78-76 lead, as Daisy Feder dropped a three of her own with 2:21 left. UCSD pushed the margin to 81-78 following a pair of free throws from Feder, but Santizo hit a pair to bring CSUMB to within one with just 24 seconds to play.
UCSD's Lauren Freidenberg was fouled on her next drive to the basket, but made just one of two at the line. Ward capitalized by draining the tying jumper with three seconds left to tie the score and force a second overtime.
CSUMB led by as many as five (89-84) in double OT, but Chelsea Carlisle hit her third three of the game and then knocked down a jumper to tie the score at 89 with 2:07 remaining.Santizo drove down the middle for a layup to put CSUMB up 91-89. Carlisle and Elaina White each hit only the front-end of their free throws, knotting the game at 91 all with 59 seconds left. Johnson went to the line with 27 seconds remaining, making the back-end of her free-throws to give CSUMB the victory.
UCSD won the battle of the board, 44-40 but both teams were even in turnovers at 14 apiece.
The Otters host Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
